JOHN MATLOCKS BIO

"Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures."
- Henry Ward Beecher ~~~

John Matlock is professional artist like his father before him. Growing up John watched and studied his father Thomas paint landscapes in oil mediums in their basement studio in West Springfield Massachusetts. 37 years later John now paints in the same studio with that same easel applying the lessons he learned from his Dad.
John studied art at Holyoke Community College and the University of Massachusetts concentrating in painting. He has sold works across the country at juried outdoor art festivals but stays based mostly in New England.
His paintings of Old country barns, coastal themes and places long forgotten have best been described as lonely and some times melancholy, and yet they invoke a feeling of nostalgia at the same time. As a native son of Massachusetts I guess you could say it’s in his blood.
His fine attention to details along with a vibrant pallette allow the viewer to actually step into the scene before them and become one with the painting.
John has also mastered the subject matter of marine life. Johns’ love for primary and complimentary colors shows true in these works, which sometimes border on the surreal. He enjoys creating an underwater environment that helps take you away from the things of man.

This website is dedicated to the Memory of Thomas Everett Matlock; Professional artist, coach, and most importantly a great father.
